Brass

Brass Plaques

Traditional and classical, brass plaques are a favourite choice for prestigious openings, memorials, and professional business plaques. The gold finish complements rustic or historic locations and where a distinguished and elegant appearance is desired.

Signmakers supply brass plaques in two finish options: polished (mirror) or linished (brushed), both of which are usually finished with a clear protective lacquer.

The polished/mirror finish is highly reflective, making the text difficult to read. Polishing adds to production and handling costs. It remains a popular and traditional finish but is better suited to smaller plaques and nameplates.

Linishing reduces the reflectivity of the metal, making the text clearly legible. While it retains the warmth of brass, the linish offers more flexibility for using brass and provides a more contemporary look.

Use Outdoors

We generally do not recommend brass for exposed outdoor situations. Although the brass metal will last indefinitely, it is not possible to permanently protect the finishes, and the metal will tarnish (turn a darker brown colour) over time, regardless of clear lacquer protection. The time taken for tarnishing to occur depends on environmental conditions but can begin quickly (within months). The breakdown process usually happens in patches and can be unsightly.

Some people prefer to leave the brass in its natural state, without protective clear lacquer, allowing it to age and tarnish naturally and uniformly, or to keep it shining with regular attention using a cloth and some Brasso. As with any engraved metal, if left natural, the text will remain legible. If you want to achieve an aged look quickly, a bare metal plaque may be the way to go.
